Mittan - Garabo Reversible Coat, Ink Charcoal (Unisex Size 2 and 3)

£495.00 £660.00

Made in Japan

Lead by a designer Takeshi Mitani, Mittan makes "modern folk clothing" based on histories of clothes and fabrics from the world. By reinterpreting the two-dimensional structure and combining it with the functionality of natural materials, Mittan aims to create long-lasting clothes that are not bound by the transient trends of the times. They work very closely with the manufactures and often develop original fabrics. Fabrics are often dyed using plants, indigo, insects, minerals, and charcoal in addition to ordinary dyes. We consider the uneven transition of colours beautiful and adding characters to garments.

The fabric used for this coat is slowly woven on a Schönherr loom using garabo (garabo spinning machine widespread in Japan around 1880. It spins coarse yarns from used cotton. Mechanism is very close to that of hand spinning, resulting yarn has uneven texture) and silk noil. The yarn is rotated at low speeds and woven slowly, resulting with a soft, textured fabric with natural elasticity to it. While modern, high-speed looms can weave 150m in a day, the Schönherr loom can only produce about 15m.

The coat features two large pockets and a belt. Reversible. This one is dyed using charcoal and reactive dye. The colour will slightly fade with use, avoid wearing with light colours at first.
