TJ Mugs
£60.00Made in Japan
Tenshin Juba is a potter based in Hyogo, Japan. Together with his wife, Asuka Juba, they live in the countryside of Kobe with their four children and cats. During the summer their home is surrounded by deep green of bamboo and pine, where in winter snow covers the ground.
Asuka and Tenshin who grow their own crops use these organic material such as rice straws or chesnut husk to make their own ash glazes. The mineral rich water that is famous in the region is also used in the process and is mixed in his slip. Minerals from the water reacting in the fire gives the depth to his pieces. By sharing a wood firing kiln they have build, they often fire pots in this labour intensive way. You can see the marks where ash has landed making every piece completely unique.
Note: To seal off the porous surfaces, before use the piece can be boiled in a large pot with a few grains of rice (Medome process).
